1. Saying the quiet part out loud
You knew something was wrong before you had language for it.
It might have been small at first. A doctrine that shifted and no one acknowledged the contradiction. A rule that made no sense but was enforced as though your eternal life depended on it. A talk at the convention that asked you to accept something your own mind quietly refused. You didn't argue, you just... noticed. And then you buried it, because noticing felt dangerous.
That burial became a habit. Over months, over years, maybe over decades, you learned to treat your own thinking as the enemy. Doubt was reframed as spiritual weakness, and questions were evidence of a heart that wasn't right with God. The very faculty that protects every human being on this planet - the ability to notice when something doesn't add up - was pathologised and turned into a sin.
In other words, your healthiest impulse was labelled your greatest threat.
And still, the doubts formed. They formed before you consciously chose them. Maybe a loved one was disfellowshipped for something arbitrary and the elders showed no compassion. A prophecy didn't materialise and no one discussed it. "New light" replaced old light, and the people who had staked their lives on the old light were expected to simply update their convictions like changing a screensaver. You saw all of this, and a voice inside you said this doesn't hold together.
In their worldview you were "losing faith" - but in fact you were gaining clarity.
One of the most insidious ways authoritarian groups maintain control is by rigging the game of language. In their framework, compliance meant strength, and thinking meant weakness.
"War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength" - 1984
The doubts you carried were not a failure of faith, they were your mind working correctly in a system designed to prevent exactly that.
Doubts are just questions you don't have answers for, and committing to the search for real truth even in the face of extreme consequence is courage, not weakness.
This series is not designed to tell you what the truth is, that isn't my place and never will be.
This series is about empowering and equipping you to escape falsehood and discover truth on your own terms.
I wish you well, and I hope this helps.
